What coaching can do for you
As a coach, I operate on the assumption that you are innately
resourceful, creative and powerful—capable of finding your own
answers to the challenges you face. I help you clarify what you
want and what's in the way, then support you as you develop and
implement your particular approach to bringing this into your life.
What I don't do is tell you what to do or how to do it. Instead,
I listen to you, ask questions and offer you tools for accessing
your own knowledge base, natural capacities and other resources.
What issues I work with as a coach
I believe that all parts of your life—work, health, relationships,
finances, spiritual beliefs and practices, values and visions—weave
together and affect one another. Changing a discrete behavioral
pattern, say around eating or exercise, might turn out to be linked
to a shift you need to make in your relationship life or it might
be aided by your spiritual practices.
Coaches do not coach clients through an active mental illness,
deep-seated trauma and abuse issues, serious substance addictions,
suicide, and other issues best treated by a licensed mental health
professional. If these issues arise, or if you need advice on legal,
medical or financial matters, I can recommend organizations that
help you find a professional in the appropriate field.
How coaching is different from therapy
Psychotherapy, as it is conventionally taught and practiced, focuses
on dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors, how they developed, and
how they might be healed. Based on the medical model, the relationship
of therapist to client is that of expert to patient.
Coaching was developed by a group of professionals
who saw the need for a "wellness" rather than a "sickness" approach.
Coach and client work as allies and equals to bring into being
the intentions of the client. When you choose this mode, rather
than focusing intensively on the various wounds of your past, we
pay attention primarily to your dreams for your future and the
steps you can take in the present to fulfill them.
